Dear OBS Community,

As the snow has reached the shores of Lake Zurich, we know that it is soon time to conclude 2017. As the end of the calendar year invites us all to engage with some reflection, we look back at some pertinent milestones that have shaped our Primary School to date.

Our ambitious goal of introducing both Lehrplan 21 alongside the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) has been well received by our students, who have shown more engagement and curiosity than ever before. Our teachers have enjoyed receiving new impulses that invite them to incorporate contemporary pedagogy, while keeping true to valuable traditions within education. As always, we encourage our parents to maintain an ongoing dialogue with their children about what we are learning and experiencing at school, as this not only supports what we do in the classroom but also lays the foundation for the trustworthy partnership that is needed between school and home.

A further highlight over the past semester was the introduction of iPads through our move to becoming a 1:1 iPad school. While the initial introductory stage prioritises induction and guided experimentation, we look forward to being able to use our new 'textbooks' as learning tools that will better allow us to differentiate, individualise and create learning experiences that will spark even more curiosity. In today's world of surplus information, it is not about finding information as much as it is about carefully selecting and critically analysing data. We are confident that our iPads will, alongside other benefits, help to equip our students with such vital skills.

As we progress into the new calendar year, we look forward to the second semester, which will with no doubt provide us with new experiences and discoveries in our journey of teaching and learning. No matter whether you will spend the festive season near of far, we wish everyone a relaxing and memorable time, cherishing precious moments with family.

Despite the rain and cold weather, we had a great turnout of students, families and staff at the PA Christmas Apéro. We were happy to see some many of you come together at our little Weihnachtsmarkt; it's a special time to connect (or reconnect) before the Holiday break. The Upper School also displayed and sold their stunning and varied art works; proceeds will all go to a local charity. Furthermore, we extend a BIG thank you to the Parent Association and all their helpers who managed to put it all together in the rain. OBS wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year!

On Saturday 9th December, the Upper School Team met for an exciting and highly productive Team Day where the staff members looked at the new LP21 curriculum alongside the learning goals of the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) for the new Grade 7 students. The curriculums together (LP21 and IMYC) provided the teachers with a challenging and unique opportunity to fully collaborate and design a tailored unit of work for our students which promotes international mindedness together with our high academic standards surrounding a main theme.

The Upper School Team will be implementing the IMYC alongside the LP21 curriculum during two phases next academic year, with the remaining phases focusing on the newly designed LP21 curriculum. The Team are enthusiastic and are looking forward to the new and exciting changes in the Upper School.

OBS got into the giving spirit again with our annual Christmas in a Box Children's Advent program. Working with Hilfswerk Osteuropa Mission, OBS families gave generously to support Osteuropa and give gifts for children in Eastern Europe who are less fortunate and/ or who are orphaned. The hundreds of gifts accumulated under the tree in the school entrance over the last two weeks. Fifth Graders, Kay, Josephine and Marilou were excused from class to help this morning move the gifts to the truck, together with PA's Sally, Susanne and Raymond, plus OBS Staffers, Yasmin and Daniel. "It's so wonderful to see all the beautifully wrapped gifts going to help children so far away and to see how much OBS gives back!", says Yasmin. Our OBS presents will be trucked to Serbia, Hungary and Ukraine. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to everyone at OBS who donated a gift for Christmas in a Box!! Thank you for your support and generosity.

Soon after the truck of gifts pulled away, Sally Steptoe and Susanne Rutsch, from the Parent Association, got working on decorating the 4m+ OBS Weihnachtsbaum!

The Holiday Season got kicked off with the Annual Gingerbread House making event! This past Saturday brought about 100 OBS students, parents and relatives together for this festive tradition, during the morning or afternoon session. It was a great success and loads of festive fun for our 30+ families who took part, by participating on site or taking the Gingerbread House Kits home. A BIG thanks goes out to the Kitchen Staff, Event Management and all helpers for organizing, preparing and executing this annual event.

On 17. November, Grade 7 and 8 students presented their Science and/or Math projects to other OBS students and teachers. For their projects, they researched, gathered data, and experimented on various topics with the help of Mrs Fischer and Hr. Lambert. The exhibition was interactive, so all students had fun going around to the different tables learning about interesting Math and Science topics!

Organized jointly by the OBS Parents' Association and the school, the event enjoys great success every year. Together with their parents, all children were able to let their creativity run wild during the Räbenschnitzen in the school and on Thursday, 16 November, the Räben were allowed to illuminate the Eichenstrasse to the Schwerziwald. After singing songs together around a large bonfire they went back to the playground where hot sausages, tea and Gluhwein awaited the children and their parents to help warm them up in the cold weather! Thank you to the PA and Kindergarten Team for making this another wonderful event for our students and families.

OBS opened its doors again this week to families and the public to get a glimpse of what happens each day when school begins! The day started with welcoming parents/ visitors to join Babycare, Prekindergarten, Kindergarten or Primary School students during their classes, which included IPC or IEYC bilingual lessons, robotics, coding and Aikido, to name a few. It continued into the afternoon where OBS Upper School students and teachers demonstrated live chemistry, guests could audit the Latin lessons and view presentations on the Upper School concept, mathematics, Biology and IB. Tanja Alvesalo, Head of Admissions, commented "It's always wonderful to see familiar faces and meet new parents; we had a great turn-out from OBS families and incoming or prospective families. It was an important day to showcase this wonderful place and always heartening to see how proud our students are of OBS." CEO Uwe Feuersenger, Department Heads, Staff and Parent Association Board Members were all on hand to greet and welcome visitors and show interested parties around. Thank you to all our families and guests who joined our Open Day, and for contributing to the fabric of our special school and community.

Welcome to the new school year! Our Upper School continues to grow and thanks to the support of their respective buddies, 20 new students have integrated smoothly so far. One new student who joined this year from a public school said, "I've learned more here in a week than during the whole last school year. Yes, indeed, we are a place where serious learning is done, but in a relaxed environment: everyone counts, nobody is laughed at, so that everyone can give their best. This is how our students have fun learning.

Dear OBS Community,

It was wonderful to see so many familiar and smiling faces during our first week of school. For many students, the new academic year meant getting to know new teachers and new students, becoming accustomed to the new dynamics. Indeed, we live in an ever-changing world and it is this, amongst other things, for which we strive to prepare our students. Our primary school teachers worked hard to ensure a smooth transition for our students. For some, of course, this year means being able to build upon the solid foundation of having had the same teachers during the course of last year. Either way, this academic year will see exciting developments, regarding our curriculum as well as the introduction of new subjects such as Coding and Applied Physics & Robotics, to name a few examples. I wish every student, staff member and family associated with the OBS Primary School a successful start to this exciting academic year. As the 'busyness' takes over, remember to always stop along the way to celebrate joyous moments of success and embrace challenges as opportunities for learning. I look forward to working with all of you.

Best wishes,

Daniel Ng
Head of Primary - Zyklus 2

A New School Year Message from our CEO and Head of Zyklus 1 (KG-Grade 2), Uwe Feuersenger:

Welcome back OBS Students! I am happy and excited to welcome all of you to the start of a new school year.

My aim is to ensure that all students become curious learners, critical and inquisitive thinkers, empowered problem-solvers, and have fun in the process. As you have already realised, new subjects have been added to your timetables and exciting developments are in the works, including the Student iPad Roll-out, an official Lego Education Innovation Studio and more. Our teachers spent a lot of time during the summer break to learn how to use their iPads, gaining in depth knowledge about media and coding, and deciding how to apply our new learning materials so that you, our students, have the best learning experience ever. This again shows that we all should become life-long learners and grasp every opportunity to broaden our horizons and experiences.

I am curious how you like our new OBS and the recent developments. So, do not hesitate to give me feedback. If you see other areas for improvement, let me know. The OBS teachers, staff and myself want to make your learning journey at OBS an exciting, inspiring, remarkable and memorable one.

Let's have a successful and fantastic year!

Uwe Feuersenger
CEO and Head of Zyklus 1 (KG-Grade 2)

OBS thanks Panoff Consulting, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Penthesilea, Junia and the Falkenberg family!

On the last day of school, OBS Kindergarten girls, Penthesilea and Junia, together with their dad, Dr. Alexander Falkenberg handed-over 26 new footballs to Obersee Bilingual School to add to their sports equipment supply. Included in this gift was one very special signed football, by legendary footballer, Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Panoff Consulting, located in Zug, donated all the footballs. Recently, Panoff Consulting organized a client event during which Ottmar Hitzfeld gave a speech and signed the special football for OBS.

Penthesilea and Junia are happy to share the many footballs with all their friends and classmates at OBS!
